Mercury Free Dentistry
General and family dentistry has always required healthcare professionals (like Dr. Taylor) to provide restorative treatments to patients of all ages. In years past, many of the restorations were made with a specific metal material called, Amalgam which could contain up to 50% Mercury. Thanks to the latest breakthroughs in dental technology, we are able to make safer and more cosmetically pleasing restorations for our patients with the use of a new material, called Composite Resin.
Much less invasive than amalgam (metal) fillings and much safer than fillings containing mercury, bonding can be used to fix chips, cracks and gaps in your teeth. Composite bonding can also be used for cosmetic purposes, like correcting oddly shaped teeth[EJS1] . Composite resin comes in many shades to precisely match your natural tooth color and lasts twice as long as old metal fillings. In a single [EJS2] visit of only one to two hours, you can greatly improve both the look and functionality of your smile!
Procedure
Cosmetic bonding attempts to conserve as much of your natural tooth as possible. First, a very mild etching solution is applied to the tooth surface, creating tiny crevices that enable the composite resin to bond better. Then, layer by layer, the composite resin is applied, with each layer hardened by a special light. When the last layer has solidified, it is finely polished to create a smooth, attractive surface.
