Endodontics (Root Canal Therapy)

The root canal and connected pulp chamber are the parts of your tooth that house something called “pulp.” The pulp consists of nerve tissue, blood vessels and connective tissue.

When tooth pulp becomes inflamed or infected it can cause severe pain and damage to your mouth and has to be removed from the root canal. This is why endodontic treatment is often referred to as root canal therapy.

Some reasons the pulp may become infected or inflamed include deep decay, a chip or crack in the tooth, repeated dental procedures on the tooth and traumatic injury. When left untreated pain and abscesses can occur.

Procedure

The goal of root canal therapy is to save your tooth by removing the damaged pulp. A local anesthetic will be applied to numb the area around the tooth.

Removal of the pulp is done with special tools designed to reach into and clean out the narrow tooth-root canals. Once the procedure is completed your tooth will be filled and capped.
